Jornada Del Muerto (The Journey of Death) is an original play by local writers and producers Emil Chaparro and Anthony Maniccia. The play is a drama in two acts that tells the story of the Natives and Spanish who fled the Piro Pueblos of New Mexico after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 to settle in Socorro, Texas. The descendants of these refugees built the Socorro Mission–an historically significant structure still in use today as a religious and heritage tourism fixture. Jornada Del Muerto explores themes of identity, religion, colonization, and interpersonal conflict against the backdrop of the harsh desert landscape and tumultuous events of the Revolt in Colonial New Spain.
